Subspecies
Closely related to and often considered to form a superspecies with Leaden Flycatcher (Myiagra rubecula), Steel-blue Flycatcher (Myiagra ferrocyanea), Makira Flycatcher (Myiagra cervinicauda), Melanesian Flycatcher (Myiagra caledonica) and Samoan Flycatcher (Myiagra albiventris).
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
- vanikorensis (Quoy & Gaimard, 1830) - Santa Cruz Is (Vanikoro), in extreme eastern Solomon Is.
- rufiventris Elliot, DG, 1859 - Fiji (except Beqa, Vatulele, Kadavu, Moala Group and Lau Archipelago).
- kandavensis Mayr, 1933 - Beqa, Vatulele and Kadavu, in south-western Fiji.
- dorsalis Mayr, 1933 - Northern Lau Archipelago and Moala Group (eastern Fiji).
- townsendi Wetmore, 1919 - Southern Lau Archipelago (south-eastern Fiji).
