Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest. Also, subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest, mangroves, dry savanna, arable land.
New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Indian Cuckooshrike (Coracina macei), Large Cuckooshrike (Coracina javensis), Slaty Cuckooshrike (Coracina schistacea), Wallacean Cuckooshrike (Coracina personata), Moluccan Cuckooshrike (Coracina atriceps), Buru Cuckooshrike (Coracina fortis), Coracina welchmani and Black-faced Cuckoo-shrike (Coracina novaehollandiae), possibly also including Stout-billed Cuckooshrike (Coracina caeruleogrisea). All were formerly treated as conspecific.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
- thilenii (Neumann, 1915) - Vanuatu (Espiritu Santo, Malo, Malakula).
- seiuncta Mayr & Ripley, 1941 - Erromango, in southern Vanuatu.
- lifuensis (Tristram, 1879) - Loyalty Is (Lifou).
- caledonica (Gmelin, 1788) - New Caledonia.
