Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Indian Cuckooshrike (Coracina macei), Large Cuckooshrike (Coracina javensis), Slaty Cuckooshrike (Coracina schistacea), Black-faced Cuckoo-shrike (Coracina novaehollandiae), Moluccan Cuckooshrike (Coracina atriceps), Buru Cuckooshrike (Coracina fortis), Coracina welchmani and South Melanesian Cuckooshrike (Coracina caledonica), possibly also including Stout-billed Cuckooshrike (Coracina caeruleogrisea). All were formerly treated as conspecific.

Subspecies pollens and unimodus sometimes treated as representing a separate species. Subspecies floris and sumbensis also sometimes given species status. Putative subspecies lettiensis (from Leti, Moa and Sermata), supposedly with weaker bill, considered insufficiently distinct from nominate.

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • floris (Sharpe, 1878)   -  Western Lesser Sunda Is (Sumbawa, Komodo, Rinca, Flores, Besar).
  • sumbensis (Meyer, AB, 1881)   -  Sumba.
  • alfrediana (Hartert, 1898)   -  Eastern Lesser Sundas (Lomblen, Alor).
  • personata (Müller, 1843)   -  Roti, Semau, Timor, Wetar, Romang, Leti, Moa and Sermata.
  • unimoda (P. L. Sclater, 1883)   -  Tanimbar Islands (Yamdena, Larat and Loetoe).
  • pollens (Salvadori, 1874)   -  Kai Is.
