Subspecies
Along with Bushy-crested Jay (Cyanocorax melanocyaneus), San Blas Jay (Cyanocorax sanblasianus) and Purplish-backed Jay (Cyanocorax beecheii) were formerly placed together in a separate genus, Cissilopha (the black-and-blue jays of Middle America). Has been thought to form a superspecies with San Blas Jay (Cyanocorax sanblasianus).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

rivularis (Brodkorb, 1940) - Tabasco and south-western Campeche, in south-eastern Mexico.
yucatanicus (Dubois, 1875) - South-eastern Mexico (Yucatán, Campeche except south-west, and Quintana Roo) south to northern Guatemala (Pet�n district) and northern Belize.
