Subspecies
Along with San Blas Jay (Cyanocorax sanblasianus), Yucatan Jay (Cyanocorax yucatanicus) and Purplish-backed Jay (Cyanocorax beecheii) were formerly placed together in a separate genus, Cissilopha (the black-and-blue jays of Middle America). Subspecies intergrade in northern and eastern El Salvador and Honduras.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
melanocyaneus (Hartlaub, 1844) - Mountains of Guatemala and southern El Salvador (coast range east to Volcán de Vicente).
chavezi (Miller, W & Griscom, 1925) - Mountains of Honduras and north-western Nicaragua.
