Nest
Domed, loosely composed of strips of bark and grasses. lined with soft materials, usually placed in the cavity of a stump or post or in a thick shrub. Often built in a shed or dwelling.
Eggs (Guide)
2 - 5; dull white to buff, lightly marked with brown to red freckled - at times spotting is indistinctl oblong-oval; about 19 x 14 mm.
Young
Altricial, nidicolous. Fledge in about 14 - 20 days.
Subspecies
Paler birds from south-central Australia (southern Northern Territory, north-western South Australia and adjacent Western Australia) included in nominate, but sometimes considered to represent an additional subspecies, whitei.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
leucopsis (Gould, 1841) - Inland south-eastern and south-central Australia, from the western slopes of the Great Divide of southern Qld - Vic and the southern coast of western Vic, SA and south-eastern WA, west and north to south-western Qld, and centralian ranges.
castaneiventris (Milligan, 1903) - South-central WA from western Nullarbor Plain and the western edge of the Great Victoria Desert, west and north to Shark Bay and Pilbara, WA.
