Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Red-capped Myzomela (Myzomela lafargei), Black-headed Myzomela (Myzomela melanocephala), Bismarck Black Myzomela (Myzomela pammelaena), Malaita Myzomela (Myzomela malaitae) and Sooty Myzomela (Myzomela tristrami), and formerly suggested that all may be conspecific. This group possibly closely related to the Cardinal Myzomela (Myzomela cardinalis) superspecies.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

atrata Hartert, 1908 - Vella Lavella and Bagga, in west-central Solomon Is.
ganongae Mayr, 1932 - Ranongga (south of Vella Lavella).
eichhorni Rothschild & Hartert, 1901 - Ghizo, Kolombangara, Wana Wana, Kohinggo, New Georgia, Vangunu, Rendova and Tetepare, in west-central Solomon Is.
