Subspecies
No subspecies.

Scytalopus magellanicus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Magellanic Tapaculo (Scytalopus magellanicus), Pale-bellied Tapaculo (Scytalopus griseicollis), Lara Tapaculo (Scytalopus fuscicauda), Neblina Tapaculo (Scytalopus altirostris), Ancash Tapaculo (Scytalopus affinis), Tschudi's Tapaculo (Scytalopus acutirostris), Vilcabamba Tapaculo (Scytalopus urubambae), Puna Tapaculo (Scytalopus simonsi), Zimmer's Tapaculo (Scytalopus zimmeri), Dusky Tapaculo (Scytalopus fuscus) and Paramillo Tapaculo (Scytalopus canus) following SACC (2005).

Formerly treated as a subspecies of Magellanic Tapaculo (Scytalopus magellanicus). Apparently related to, and forming a superspecies with, two undescribed species from south-central Peru (one at 3450-3650 m in Pasco, one at 3000-4000 m in Apurí­mac).
