Scytalopus magellanicus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Magellanic Tapaculo (Scytalopus magellanicus), Pale-bellied Tapaculo (Scytalopus griseicollis), Lara Tapaculo (Scytalopus fuscicauda), Neblina Tapaculo (Scytalopus altirostris), Ancash Tapaculo (Scytalopus affinis), Tschudi's Tapaculo (Scytalopus acutirostris), Vilcabamba Tapaculo (Scytalopus urubambae), Puna Tapaculo (Scytalopus simonsi), Zimmer's Tapaculo (Scytalopus zimmeri), Dusky Tapaculo (Scytalopus fuscus) and Paramillo Tapaculo (Scytalopus canus) following SACC (2005).

Was formerly regarded as a subspecies of Magellanic Tapaculo (Scytalopus magellanicus). More recently, owing to lack of vocal data, left as a subspecies of Pale-bellied Tapaculo (Scytalopus griseicollis), but its isolated geographical distribution makes it unlikely that the two are conspecific. Distinction from Merida Tapaculo (Scytalopus meridanus) far from clear, and the two may prove to be conspecific or even synonyms. Further research required.

Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Merida Tapaculo (Scytalopus meridanus).
