Subspecies
Dendrocolaptes certhia (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Amazonian Barred Woodcreeper (Dendrocolaptes certhia) and Western Barred Woodcreeper (Dendrocolaptes sanctithomae) following SACC (2005).
Until recently considered conspecific with Amazonian Barred Woodcreeper (Dendrocolaptes certhia). Accorded full species status on basis of vocal, behavioural and morphological differences. Vocal characters suggest that subspecies punctipectus may also be a separate species, but more study needed.
Proposed subspecies hyleorus doubtfully distinct from punctipectus, may reflect intergradation between it and nominate in northern Colombia (Magdalena, Santander). Variation in both bill length and extent of pale base of lower mandible is clinal in nominate; this, combined with a typographical error, resulted in description of subspecies nigrirostris (Costa Rica, Panama) and colombianus (western Colombia, north-western Ecuador), both subsequently synonymized. Supposed variation leading to description of legtersi (Yucatán Peninsula) appears to reflect an artifact of type series.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
sheffleri Binford, 1965 - Pacific slope of Sierra Madre del Sur in south-western Mexico (Guerrero, Oaxaca).
sanctithomae (Lafresnaye, 1852) - Central America and north-western South America from southern Mexico (central Veracruz, Yucatán Peninsula) southern on Caribbean slope to Panama; locally also Pacific slope in southern Mexico (one record in Chiapas), Honduras, El Salvador and from north-western Costa Rica south to Panama, northern and western Colombia (Chocó region) and north-western (one record WC) Ecuador.
hesperius Bangs, 1907 - Pacific-slope lowlands of south-western Costa Rica (including Osa Peninsula) and adjacent western Panama.
punctipectus Phelps & Gilliard, 1940 - Northern Colombia (middle Magdalena Valley south to Santander, also Norte de Santander) and north-western Venezuela (Maracaibo Basin in Zulia and northern Mérida). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Eastern Barred Woodcreeper (Dendrocolaptes punctipectus).
