Subspecies
No subspecies.
Scientific name was long considered a junior synonym of Rufous-capped Spinetail (Synallaxis ruficapilla), but recently shown to represent a separate species. Bahia Spinetail (Synallaxis cinerea) is a synonym. Forms a superspecies with Rufous-capped Spinetail (Synallaxis ruficapilla) and Pinto's Spinetail (Synallaxis infuscata). This superspecies is suggested by some authors as being most closely related to Sooty-fronted Spinetail (Synallaxis frontalis), Azara's Spinetail (Synallaxis azarae) and Apurimac Spinetail (Synallaxis courseni) on basis of plumage and vocal similarities.
