Subspecies
No subspecies.
Forms a superspecies with Rufous-capped Spinetail (Synallaxis ruficapilla) and Synallaxis cinerea, this superspecies suggested by some authors as being most closely related to Sooty-fronted Spinetail (Synallaxis frontalis), Azara's Spinetail (Synallaxis azarae) and Apurimac Spinetail (Synallaxis courseni) on basis of plumage and vocal similarities. Was previously considered a subspecies of Rufous-capped Spinetail (Synallaxis ruficapilla), but vocal differences indicate that it merits rank of full species. Some authors have proposed that it is more closely related to Slaty Spinetail (Synallaxis brachyura) or Cinereous-breasted Spinetail (Synallaxis hypospodia).
