Subspecies
Plumage similarities suggest to some that this species is sister to a group that consists of Rusty-crowned Tit-Spinetail (Leptasthenura pileata), White-browed Tit-Spinetail (Leptasthenura xenothorax) and Streaked Tit-Spinetail (Leptasthenura striata).

Proposed subspecies boliviana (northern Bolivia) described as like peruviana but with back streaks wider, outer webs of secondaries blacker and lacking rufous, and rectrices blacker and wider, but considered not diagnosable by later authors.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • extima Todd, 1916   -  Northern Colombia (Santa Marta Mts).
  • certhia (Madarász, 1903)   -  Andes of western Venezuela (Mérida, Trujillo, presumably also Táchira).
  • exterior Todd, 1919   -  Eastern Andes of northern Colombia (Boyacá, Cundinamarca).
  • andicola Sclater, 1870   -  Central Andes of Colombia (southern from Tolima) south to Ecuador (south to northern Azuay on western slope and to Cotopaxi and south-western Napo on eastern slope, also in southern Zamora-Chinchipe).
  • peruviana Chapman, 1919   -  Andes of western and southern Peru (Ancash southern locally to Arequipa and Puno) and northern Bolivia (La Paz); sight report from northern Chile (Tarapacá).
