Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with White-browed Tit-Spinetail (Leptasthenura xenothorax), and considered conspecific by some authors. Together, the two are presumably most closely related to Streaked Tit-Spinetail (Leptasthenura striata). Subspecies cajabambae has alternatively been considered a subspecies of Streaked Tit-Spinetail (Leptasthenura striata), but may merit species rank.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
cajabambae Chapman, 1921 - Northern and central Peru (Cajamarca south to Ancash, and dry interior slopes of eastern Andes south to Junín).
pileata Sclater, 1881 - West-central Peru (Chillón and Rimac Valleys, in Lima).
latistriata Koepcke, 1965 - South-central Peru (western Huancavelica, Ayacucho).
