Subspecies
Genetic, morphological and behavioural analyses indicate that this species is part of a monophyletic group that also includes Brown-bellied Antwren (Epinecrophylla gutturalis), Checker-throated Antwren (Epinecrophylla fulviventris), Foothill Antwren (Epinecrophylla spodionota), Western Stipple-throated Antwren (Epinecrophylla haematonota), Yasuni Antwren (Epinecrophylla fjeldsaai), Western Ornate Antwren (Epinecrophylla ornata) and Rufous-tailed Antwren (Epinecrophylla erythrura) (the "stipple-throated antwren assemblage"), and which may not be closely related to other species placed in the genus. With exception of distinctive subspecies phaeonota, morphological distinctions among subspecies are not clear, and ranges given below are tentative. Further study is needed.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
leucophthalma (Pelzeln, 1868) - Eastern Peru (east of R Ucayali), western Brazil south of R Amazon (east to lower R Madeira and drainage of R Aripuaní) and north-western and north-eastern Bolivia (Pando, north-eastern Santa Cruz).
dissita (Bond, J, 1950) - South-eastern Peru (Puno) and adjacent Bolivia (La Paz).
phaeonota (Todd, 1927) - Southern Amazonian Brazil from lower R Madeira east to lower R Tapajós.
sordida (Todd, 1927) - R Tapajós east to R Tocantins.
