Subspecies
Genetic, morphological and behavioural analyses indicate that this species is part of a monophyletic group that also includes Brown-bellied Antwren (Epinecrophylla gutturalis), Checker-throated Antwren (Epinecrophylla fulviventris), White-eyed Antwren (Epinecrophylla leucophthalma), Foothill Antwren (Epinecrophylla spodionota), Western Stipple-throated Antwren (Epinecrophylla haematonota), Yasuni Antwren (Epinecrophylla fjeldsaai) and Western Ornate Antwren (Epinecrophylla ornata) (the "stipple-throated antwren assemblage"), and which may not be closely related to other species placed in the genus. Subspecies possibly intergrade.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • erythrura Sclater, 1890   -  Extreme north-western Brazil (western bank of upper R Negro), south-eastern Colombia (Meta east to Vaupés and south to Putumayo), eastern Ecuador and north-eastern Peru (north of R Marañón and R Amazon).
  • septentrionalis (Zimmer, JT, 1932)   -  Eastern Peru (along base of Andes south of R Marañón south to Puno) and west-central Amazonian Brazil (scattered records from Amazonas south of R Solimíµes, east to Tefé and middle R Juruá).
