Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Western Stipple-throated Antwren (Epinecrophylla haematonota), which formerly considered conspecific, and with Yasuni Antwren (Epinecrophylla fjeldsaai). Genetic, morphological and behavioural analyses indicate that all three are part of a monophyletic group that also includes Brown-bellied Antwren (Epinecrophylla gutturalis), Checker-throated Antwren (Epinecrophylla fulviventris), White-eyed Antwren (Epinecrophylla leucophthalma), Western Ornate Antwren (Epinecrophylla ornata) and Rufous-tailed Antwren (Epinecrophylla erythrura) (the "stipple-throated antwren assemblage"), and which may not be closely related to other species placed in the genus.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • spodionota Sclater & Salvin, 1880   -  Eastern Andean slope from southern Colombia (Cauca, Caquetá) south to northern Peru (Amazonas north of R Marañón).
  • sororia (von Berlepsch & Stolzmann, 1894)   -  Eastern slope in Peru south of R Marañón (San Martín south to Madre de Dios).
