Habitat
Canopy and borders of humid forest, secondary growth, and tall trees in shade coffee plantations. From 1,200 - 1,600 m, occasionally down to 900 m.

Range (Guide)

Costa Rica (B) (NB), Panama (B) (NB).

Pacific slope of Costa Rica (southern from Gulf of Nicoya) and western Panama (south to Chiriquí).

Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.

Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status VU
Habitat destruction due to conversion to agriculture is the main threat.

Voice
Mostly silent. Males produce wing slurrings and females raucous shrieks.

Subspecies
May form a superspecies with Lovely Cotinga (Cotinga amabilis), Blue Cotinga (Cotinga nattererii), Plum-throated Cotinga (Cotinga maynana), Purple-breasted Cotinga (Cotinga cotinga) and Banded Cotinga (Cotinga maculata), and all sometimes treated as conspecific.
