Subspecies
May form a superspecies with Lovely Cotinga (Cotinga amabilis), Turquoise Cotinga (Cotinga ridgwayi), Blue Cotinga (Cotinga nattererii), Plum-throated Cotinga (Cotinga maynana) and Purple-breasted Cotinga (Cotinga cotinga), and all sometimes treated as conspecific. Probably closest to last of those, which similar in plumage and in male's wingtip modification.
No subspecies.
Similar Species
Female White-winged Cotinga (Xipholena atropurpurea) is not as scaly, but more uniform grey, with white fringing on wings and pale iris.
