Subspecies
Myiodynastes maculatus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) was provisionally split into Northern Streaked Flycatcher (Myiodynastes maculatus) and Myiodynastes solitarius by Stotz et al. (1996) but this treatment has not been adopted, following SACC (2005).

Affinities of genus uncertain. Long hypothesized as being closest to Conopias, largely on basis of similar hole-nesting tendencies. Genus probably monophyletic, although this only weakly supported by recent analyses of molecular-sequence data (likely due to inappropriate markers for the apparently long branches and deep level of divergence within genus). Results of separate analyses of plumage/syringeal morphology and molecular data were not completely congruent, but evidence strongly suggests that present species is sister to Sulphur-bellied Flycatcher (Myiodynastes luteiventris), and that the two are sister-group to a clade consisting of Golden-bellied Flycatcher (Myiodynastes hemichrysus) and Golden-crowned Flycatcher (Myiodynastes chrysocephalus). Has been suggested that subspecies solitarius may represent a separate species, on basis largely of differences in plumage, but apparent intermediate forms from northern Brazil (southern Amazonas) and general similarity in voice to other subspecies argue against this. Otherwise, clearly observable differences between supposed subspecies from localities as widely separated as northern Venezuela, the Guianas and north-eastern and southern Brazil are lacking. A close re-evaluation and probably revision required.

The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

  • insolens Ridgway, 1887   -  Breeds eastern and south-eastern Mexico (south-western Tamaulipas south to Puebla, northern Oaxaca and northern Chiapas, east to southern Yucatán and Quintana Roo), northern Guatemala, Belize and north-western Honduras; migrates south to northern South America.
  • difficilis Zimmer, JT, 1937   -  Western Costa Rica south to Panama (including Coiba I and Cébaco), Colombia (except northern and west) and western Venezuela (west of Andes in Zulia and Táchira, western Falcón east to Curimagua, and eastern base of Andes southern from Portuguesa).
  • nobilis Sclater, PL, 1859   -  Northern Colombia (Córdoba eastern in coast region to Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and western side of Sierra de Perijá).
  • tobagensis Zimmer, JT, 1937   -  Venezuela (except west, but including Margarita I), Trinidad and Tobago, and Guyana.
  • chapmani Zimmer, JT, 1937   -  Western Colombia (southern from Serranía de Baudó in Chocó, absent or local in south-western lowlands), western Ecuador and extreme north-western Peru (south to Piura, also recorded Arequipa).
  • maculatus (Müller, 1776)   -  Surinam, French Guiana, northern Brazil (upper R Negro south to southern bank of R Amazon, east to north-western Maranhío) and eastern Peru (R Napo and R Ucayali area).
  • solitarius (Vieillot, 1819)   -  Breeds central and southern Peru and central and eastern Brazil south to eastern Bolivia, Paraguay, Argentina (south to San Luis, La Rioja, Córdoba, La Pampa and northern Buenos Aires) and Uruguay; southern populations migrate north. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Southern Streaked Flycatcher (Myiodynastes solitarius).
