Subspecies
Sometimes placed with Crowned Chat-Tyrant (Silvicultrix frontalis), Yellow-bellied Chat-Tyrant (Silvicultrix diadema) and Jelski's Chat-Tyrant (Silvicultrix jelskii) in a separate genus, Silvicultrix, but genetic and anatomical data indicate that this would make present genus paraphyletic. All form a superspecies. Formerly considered conspecific with Crowned Chat-Tyrant (Silvicultrix frontalis) and, later, with Jelski's Chat-Tyrant (Silvicultrix jelskii).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
similis (Carriker, 1933) - Eastern Andes of Peru (southern Amazonas south to JunÃn).
pulchella (Sclater & Salvin, 1876) - Southern Peru (Cordillera Vilcabamba, in western Cuzco and adjoining Ayacucho) southern along eastern Andes to north-western and west-central Bolivia.
