Subspecies
Sometimes placed with Crowned Chat-Tyrant (Silvicultrix frontalis), Golden-browed Chat-Tyrant (Silvicultrix pulchella) and Jelski's Chat-Tyrant (Silvicultrix jelskii) in a separate genus, Silvicultrix, but genetic and anatomical data indicate that this would make present genus paraphyletic. All form a superspecies. Described subspecies meridana (from Mérida, in Venezuela) considered indistinguishable from nominate; cajamarcae (from Cajamarca, in Peru) synonymized with gratiosa.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • jesupi (Allen, JA, 1900)   -  Santa Marta Mts, in northern Colombia.
  • rubellula (Wetmore, 1946)   -  Sierra de Perijá, on Colombia-Venezuela border.
  • tovarensis (Gilliard, 1940)   -  Coastal range in northern Venezuela (Aragua, Distrito Federal).
  • diadema (Hartlaub, 1843)   -  Eastern Andes in western Venezuela and Colombia.
  • gratiosa (Sclater, PL, 1862)   -  Western and central Andes and western slope of eastern Andes of Colombia south to northern Peru (Piura, Cajamarca).
