Subspecies
Sometimes placed with Golden-browed Chat-Tyrant (Silvicultrix pulchella), Yellow-bellied Chat-Tyrant (Silvicultrix diadema) and Jelski's Chat-Tyrant (Silvicultrix jelskii) in a separate genus, Silvicultrix, but genetic and anatomical data indicate that this would make present genus paraphyletic. All form a superspecies. Golden-browed Chat-Tyrant (Silvicultrix pulchella) and Jelski's Chat-Tyrant (Silvicultrix jelskii) previously considered subspecies of present species. Described subspecies orientalis (from Ecuador) synonymized with nominate.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
albidiadema (Lafresnaye, 1848) - Eastern Andes of Colombia (Bogotá).
frontalis (Lafresnaye, 1847) - Western and central Andes of Colombia and both slopes in Ecuador.
boliviana Carriker, 1935 - Andes of central and southern Peru (San Martín south to Huánuco, and Urubamba Valley in southern Cuzco) and Bolivia (eastern slope from La Paz south-east to Santa Cruz). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Southern Crowned Chat-Tyrant (Ochthoeca spodionota).
spodionota Berlepsch and Stolzmann, 1896 - Junín, western Cuzco (in Cordillera Vilcabamba) and adjoining Ayacucho, in central Peru. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Southern Crowned Chat-Tyrant (Ochthoeca spodionota).
