Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Yellow-green Tyrannulet (Phylloscartes flavovirens) and Olive-green Tyrannulet (Phylloscartes virescens), all formerly treated as conspecific. Species Restinga Tyrannulet (Phylloscartes kronei) and Bahia Tyrannulet (Phylloscartes beckeri) (both recently described) apparently belong with this group. Geographical differences minimal, and the maintaining of subspecies perhaps unwarranted.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
angustirostris (d'Orbigny & Lafresnaye, 1837) - Eastern Andes from northern Peru (San Martín) south to northern Bolivia (La Paz, Cochabamba).
tucumanus Zimmer, JT, 1940 - North-western Argentina (Jujuy south to Tucumán and Catamarca).
ventralis (Temminck, 1824) - South-eastern Brazil (Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro south to southern Mato Grosso do Sul and Rio Grande do Sul), eastern Paraguay, north-eastern Argentina (Misiones, Entre Ríos) and Uruguay.
