Recently described species, apparently belonging to a superspecies that also contains Mottle-cheeked Tyrannulet (Phylloscartes ventralis), Bahia Tyrannulet (Phylloscartes beckeri), Yellow-green Tyrannulet (Phylloscartes flavovirens) and Olive-green Tyrannulet (Phylloscartes virescens). Extremely similar to Mottle-cheeked Tyrannulet (Phylloscartes ventralis), and possibly only a well-marked subspecies of it, but the two have quite dissimilar voices and different habitats, and occur in close proximity to one another in south-eastern Brazil.
