Subspecies
No subspecies.
Formerly treated in the now defunct genus Idioptilon and originally regarded as a subspecies of Buff-breasted Tody-tyrant (Hemitriccus mirandae). Forms a superspecies with Buff-breasted Tody-tyrant (Hemitriccus mirandae) and Kaempfer's Tody-tyrant (Hemitriccus kaempferi), perhaps also including Black-throated Tody-tyrant (Hemitriccus granadensis) and Fork-tailed Tody-tyrant (Hemitriccus furcatus).
Similar Species
Eye-ringed Tody-tyrant (Hemitriccus orbitatus) which has a conspicuous whitish eye-ring.
