Vagrant to Israel, Oman, Portugal, Seychelles, United Kingdom, Yemen.
Japan (northern Kyushu, western Honshu) west to Yellow Sea off China and Korea, and north to extreme south-eastern USSR. Breeds on islands in the north-western Pacific Ocean, including Sea of Japan, Yellow Sea and off Korea. In non-breeding season migrates through south-eastern Asian seas and into Indian Ocean. Recent records suggest possible breeding in northern Atlantic.

Does not breed in Australia. Breeds on islands in the north-western Pacific Ocean.
Similar Species
Tristram's Storm-Petrel (Hydrobates tristrami) which has a more forked tail and buffish wingbars and rump and Matsudaira's Storm-Petrel (Hydrobates matsudairae) which has a more forked tail and shows white shafts on upperwing flight feathers and White-bellied Storm-Petrel (Fregetta grallaria) which has a square tail and pale mottling on the belly and undertail coverts.
