Habitat
Marine, pelagic, in sub-tropical and highly saline waters of the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans, migrating to tropical waters in the non-breeding season.
Argentina, Australia (B), Brazil, Chile, French Polynesia, French Southern Territories (B), New Zealand (B), South Africa, St Helena (B).
Vagrant to Angola, Antarctica, Maldives, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.
Introduced to Namibia.

Breeding Season (Guide)
Breeds at various islands in the South Atlantic and southern Pacific Oceans, including Lord Howe Island (December - May).
Nest
A chamber at the end of a burrow, or in deep crevices between rocks. In colonies.
Eggs (Guide)
1; white, with faint pink spots at the blunt end; oval; about 35 x 26 mm. Incubation: 40 days; by both sexes.
Young
Semi-altriciual, nidicolous.
Subspecies
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
- grallaria (Vieillot, 1817) - Lord Howe and Kermadec Is.
- leucogaster (Gould, 1844) - Tristan da Cunha, (?) Gough I, St Paul and (?) Amsterdam Is. Validity of this subspecies is questioned and is sometimes ascribed to Black-bellied Storm-Petrel (Fregetta tropica).
- segethi (Philippi & Landbeck, 1860) - Juan Fernandez Is.
- titan Murphy, 1928 - Rapa I in Austral Is (south-central Pacific). Sometimes considered a full species (Rapa Storm-Petrel).
Similar Species
Difficult to separate from Black-bellied Storm-Petrel (Fregetta tropica). Dark morph with Wilson's Storm-Petrel (Oceanites oceanicus).
