Marine, pelagic, in sub-Antarctic and Antarctic Zones, migrating to northern hemisphere in the non-breeding season.

Unknown to Sâo Tomé e Principe.

Food
Plankton, taken from the surface. Small fish, squid and crustaceans, fat from dead whales or seals.

Voice
Generally silent, but foraging groups, and at olonies, give harsh, stuttering, chaterring, 'kerr kerr kerr kerr', calls.

Breeding Season (Guide)
Does not breed in Australia. Breeds on Antarctic continent and surrounding islands, north to the Subantarctic Zone.

Nest
A large chamber at the end of a burrow, lined with feathers. In colonies.

Eggs (Guide)
1; white, usually lightly spotted with red-brown, especially at the larger end; oval; about 34 x 24 mm. Incubation: 39 - 48 days; by both sexes in 48 hr shifts.

Young
Semi-altricial, nidicolous. Fledge in about 60 days. Fed by both parents.

Subspecies
Possible subspecies maorianus (taken off New Zealand) may be extinct.

Both are found in Australian waters.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • oceanicus (Kuhl, 1820)   -  Subantarctic islands, from Cape Horn east to Kerguelen Is.
  • exasperatus Mathews, 1912   -  South Shetland, South Sandwich Is, coastal Antarctica.
  • chilensis Murphy, 1936   -  Range incompletely known. Breeds Tierra del Fuego; ranges north to Peru.
