Hawaiian Islands, but outside the breeding season it disperses into the tropical Pacific Ocean, moving south and east into the waters of the Equatorial Counter Current, being recorded as far west as the Mariana Islands, with other records from Samoa and American Samoa.

A burrow dug into a steep slope, usually sheltered by ferns.

Subspecies
Puffinus auricularis (Sibley and Moroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Townsend's Shearwater (Puffinus auricularis) and Newell's Shearwater (Puffinus newelli) following Brooke (2004).
Initially considered to be a subspecies of Manx Shearwater (Puffinus puffinus). The Rapa Shearwater is considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Newell's Shearwater (Puffinus newelli) but others as a subspecies of Little Shearwater (Puffinus assimilis).
Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Manx Shearwater (Puffinus puffinus).
No subspecies.
Similar Species
Townsend's Shearwater (Puffinus auricularis) which has dark undertail-coverts, a shorter tail and a less sharp boundary between the black and white on the face.
