Subspecies
Puffinus auricularis (Sibley and Moroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Townsend's Shearwater (Puffinus auricularis) and Newell's Shearwater (Puffinus newelli) following Brooke (2004).
Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Manx Shearwater (Puffinus puffinus).
No subspecies.
Similar Species
Black-vented Shearwater (Puffinus opisthomelas) which is larger, distinctly brownish and has less clear separation of dark and light areas.
