Pelagic, shelf waters and further out. Rare inshore.

Vagrant to Israel, Jordan, Maldives, Singapore.

Does not breed in Australia. Breeds at various islands around Japan and Korea (March - October).

Nest
In a chamber at the end of a burrow.

Eggs (Guide)
1; white; long-oval; about 68 x 45 mm. Incubation: about 64 days; by both sexes.

Young
Fledge in about 66 days.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Similar Species
Light phase of Wedge-tailed Shearwater (Ardenna pacifica) which has similar all-dark remiges, but is smaller with a shorter, darker bill, more slender wings, a more wdeged shaped tail and no white on face or streaking on the head, Buller's Shearwater (Ardenna bulleri) which is slightly larger and stockier, with a larger head and thicker neck, thick, yellow bill, and a uniform grey head without white face or streaks, whiter underwings and less dark streaking on primary coverts and no dark bar across median primary coverts or dark tips to the greater primary coverts, Pink-footed Shearwater (Ardenna creatopus) which has narrower wings. thicker, pink bill, dark forehead and sides of head without streaking, uniform greyish brown upperparts and no white V on the upper tail-coverts and Great Shearwater (Ardenna gravis) which has a dark bill, white collar contrasting with a white cap, a dark patch on the belly, dark under tail-coverts and dark bars across the wing-pit.
