Habitat
Marine, pelagic, in subtropical waters, migrating in the non-breeding season through the tropics to subtropical and subarctic waters of the northern Pacific.

Vagrant to Japan.

Unknown to Ecuador.

Breeds at the Poor Knights Islands, New Zealand, dispersing into the North Pacific, reaching the coasts of eastern Australia north to Stradbroke Island, Qld.

Estimated population is 2,500,000 (2010) and increasing.

Drift-nets and long-lines are possibly the main threats.

Chiefly crustaceans and a small amounts of fish during the breeding season.

Voice
Nocturnal and vary noisy at breeding colonies uttering braying and howling calls in flight and from the ground. Apparently silent at sea.

Nest
A chamber at the end of a burrow, lined with stone fragments or twigs and leaves. In dense colonies.

Eggs (Guide)
1; dull, white; long-oval; about 66 x 43 mm. Incubation: about 50 days; by both sexes.

Young
Semi-altricial, nidicolous. Fledge in about 100 days.
