Habitat
Pelagic. Breeds in wet heath, above 380 m.
Argentina (NB), Brazil (NB), Namibia (NB), South Africa (NB), Southeast Atlantic (B) (NB), Southwest Atlantic (NB), St Helena (B), Uruguay (NB).
Vagrant to Angola, Australia.

Breeds on Inaccessible Island in the Tristan da Cunha group. Formerly, may have occured throughout Indian Ocean, possibly breeding on Amsterdam Island.

Food
Cephalopods, decapod crustaceans and small fish.
Voice
Similar to White-chinned Petrel (Procellaria aequinoctialis) but slightly deeper-pitched.
Nest
In a burrow in the banks of river valleys, and in adjacent marshy areas.
Subspecies
Procellaria aequinoctialis (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into White-chinned Petrel (Procellaria aequinoctialis) and Spectacled Petrel (Procellaria conspicillata) following Brooke (2004).
Has been considered to include Black Petrel (Procellaria parkinsoni) and Westland Petrel (Procellaria westlandica).
Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of White-chinned Petrel (Procellaria aequinoctialis).
No subspecies.
