Rare but probably regular summer visitor to south-eastern Australian waters.
Habitat
Marine, pelagic, mainly east of breeding islands in sub-tropical waters during the breeding season, dispersing to eastern tropical Pacific Ocean, inhabiting offshore and pelagic waters.

Does not breed in Australia. Breed on New Zealand islands (November - December).

Nest
In a chamber at the end of a burrow, a shallow bowl, sparsely lined with dead twigs or leaves, or in hollow logs, cavities under banks and among roots of trees.
Eggs (Guide)
1; initially smooth, becoming polished and glossy, whitel oval, occasionally pyriform; about 69 x 50 mm. Incubation: about 56 days; by both sexes. No replacement laying.
Young
Semi-altricial, nidicolous. Fledge in about 107 days. Fed by incomplete regurgitation.
Subspecies
Has been considered conspecific with White-chinned Petrel (Procellaria aequinoctialis) and Westland Petrel (Procellaria westlandica).
