Extremely rare vagrant or accidental to offshore waters of eastern Australia.
Habitat
Marine, pelagic in sub-tropical and tropical waters of south-eastern Pacific Ocean, moving to the northern Pacific during the non-breeding season.
Voice
Noisy at breeding colonies uttering a prolonged, sighing whistle, sometimes followed by a harsh bark or 'wowk' in flight. Also a booming 'boo-boo-boo' uttered on ground and in flight. A chattering call uttered on the ground and occasionally from within a burrow. Apparently silent at sea.
