Rare. First Australian record on Sunshine Coast Pelagic on November 5, 2011 (see BARC Submission 720).

Marine, pelagic.

Range (Guide)
Chile (B), Eastern Central Pacific (NB), French Polynesia (NB), Guam (NB), Japan (NB), Marshall Islands (NB), Micronesia [Federated States of] (NB), Northeast Pacific (NB), Northern Mariana Islands (NB), Northwest Pacific (NB), Southeast Pacific (B) (NB), United States Minor Outlying Islands (NB), USA (NB), Western Central Pacific (NB).

Vagrant to New Zealand.

Alejandro Selkirk I (formerly Más Afuera I) in Juan Fernández Is. Breeds only on Juan Fernandez Island off South America, in subtropical and high-salinity tropical waters of the southern Pacific Ocean. In the non-breeding season migrates to the subtropical North Pacific.

Estimated population is 400,000 (2010) and stable.

Does not breed in Australia. Breeds on Juan Fernandez Island.

Subspecies
May form superspecies with Gould's Petrel (Pterodroma leucoptera), Pycroft's Petrel (Pterodroma pycrofti) and (?) Bonin Petrel (Pterodroma hypoleuca). Sometimes includes Pycroft's Petrel (Pterodroma pycrofti).

No subspecies.

Similar Species
Cook's Petrel (Pterodroma cookii) and Pycroft's Petrel (Pterodroma pycrofti) have the same underwing pattern, and foot color but differ mainly in head and back markings.
