Estimated population, about 1.8 million.

Very rare vagrant, accidental to Australia and New Zealand.

Habitat
Coasts and islands of southern South America, on grassy or forested islands or on mainland, on tiers of cliff faces, banks and sandhills. In breeding season, feeds in inshore waters, and on migration found in pelagic waters.

Range (Guide)
Argentina (B), Brazil (NB), Chile (B), Falkland Islands (Malvinas) (B), Uruguay.

Vagrant to Antarctica, Australia, New Zealand, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.

Southern coasts of South America, from central Chile and central Argentina south to Cape Horn; also breeds in Falkland Is.

Food
Cuttlefish during the breeding season, found among inshore kelp beds, At other times small fish.

Voice
Mournful, donkey-like braying, three staccato notes followed by a long one. Usually quiet during moult.

Nest
In a chamber at the end of a burrow in grassy slopes, woodland, peatbanks, sandhills and coastal bluffs, lined with pebbles, twigs, leaves and feathers, forming a mound. In colonies.

Eggs (Guide)
2; white. Incubation: about 28 days.

Subspecies
Sometimes considered conspecific with African Penguin (Spheniscus demersus) and Humboldt Penguin (Spheniscus humboldti). Alternatively, they may form superspecies.

However, Humboldt Penguin (Spheniscus humboldti) and African Penguin (Spheniscus demersus) have been known to interbreed with it in captivity and may therefore be subspecies, although Magellanic Penguin (Spheniscus magellanicus) and Humboldt Penguin (Spheniscus humboldti) do not appear to interbreed in areas where their ranges overlap.

No subspecies.

Similar Species
Southern Rockhopper Penguin (Eudyptes chrysocome) which usually only has one chest band.
