In rock crevices and openings on rocky islands or along the coast. In small colonies.

Subspecies
Sometimes considered conspecific with African Penguin (Spheniscus demersus) and Magellanic Penguin (Spheniscus magellanicus). Alternatively, they may form superspecies.
