Subtropical and tropical lowland dry shrubland. From sea-level - 2,000 m.

Range (Guide)

Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Tanzania [United Republic of], Uganda.

South-eastern Ethiopia and Somalia south to eastern Uganda and northern Tanzania.

Subspecies
Pale Chanting-goshawk (Melierax canorus) and Eastern Chanting-goshawk (Melierax poliopterus) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) are retained as separate species contra Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993) who include poliopterus as a subspecies of Pale Chanting-goshawk (Melierax canorus).

Probably forms superspecies with Pale Chanting-goshawk (Melierax canorus) and Dark Chanting-goshawk (Melierax metabates) and sometimes considered conspecific with Pale Chanting-goshawk (Melierax canorus), but well separated geographically.

No subspecies.
