Angola, Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, Zimbabwe.

Vagrant to Lesotho.

Subspecies
Probably forms superspecies with Eastern Chanting-goshawk (Melierax poliopterus) and Dark Chanting-goshawk (Melierax metabates) and sometimes considered conspecific with Eastern Chanting-goshawk (Melierax poliopterus).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

argentior Clancey, 1960 - Southern Angola southern and east through Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe to north-eastern South Africa in Transvaal and north-western Orange Free State.
canorus (Rislachi, 1799) - Southern South Africa, in Cape Province, south-eastern Orange Free State and (formerly) southern Natal.
