Estimated population is 50 - 249 (2010) and decreasing.

Status VU
Loos of habitat due to removal of livestock, predation by cats and Common Myna (Acridotheres tristis) are the main threats.

Subspecies
Kittlitz's Plover (Charadrius pecuarius) and St Helena Plover (Charadrius sanctaehelenae) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) are retained as separate species contra Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993) who include sanctaehelenae as a subspecies of Kittlitz's Plover (Charadrius pecuarius).

Often considered conspecific with Kittlitz's Plover (Charadrius pecuarius). Probably best considered to form superspecies with Kittlitz's Plover (Charadrius pecuarius) and Black-banded Plover (Charadrius thoracicus).

No subspecies.

Similar Species
Kittlitz's Plover (Charadrius pecuarius) which is smaller, has shorter and thicker legs and shorter bill.
