Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with White-headed Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus eugeniae). Also allied to White-bibbed Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus rivoli) and Yellow-banded Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus solomonensis). Taxonomy of present species and White-bibbed Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus rivoli) is confused, and the two are sometimes considered conspecific. Some authors transfer subspecies vicinus and lewisii to White-bibbed Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus rivoli). Others grant species rank to pectoralis, incorporating salvadorii. Subspecies geelvinkiana also sometimes considered a distinct species.

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • viridis (Linnaeus, 1766)   -  Southern Moluccas, on Buru, Seram, Ambon, Haruku, Nusa Laut, Saparua and Seram Laut.
  • pectoralis (Wagler, 1829)   -  Western Papuan Is (Waigeo, Misool, Kofiau, Gagi) and north-western New Guinea east to Manokwari and Lobo Bay.
  • geelvinkianus Schlegel, 1871   -  Numfor, Biak and Meos Num islands (northern New Guinea).
  • salvadorii Rothschild, 1892   -  Yapen I and northern New Guinea from R Memberamo to Madang Province.
  • vicinus Hartert, 1895   -  Trobriand and D'Entrecasteaux Is.
  • lewisii Ramsay, EP, 1882   -  Manus (Admiralty Is), Lihir Is and Nissan (Green Is) through Solomons (including Bougainville) east to Guadalcanal, Malaita and Ulawa.
