Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Claret-breasted Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus viridis). Also allied to White-bibbed Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus rivoli) and Yellow-banded Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus solomonensis). Taxonomy of Claret-breasted Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus viridis) and present species is confused. Some authorities consider them conspecific. Others treat subspecies vicinus and lewisii of Claret-breasted Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus viridis) as subspecies of present species.
