Subspecies
Considered most closely related to White-bibbed Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus rivoli), and allied to the Claret-breasted Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus viridis) superspecies.

The following 9 subspecies are recognised:

  • speciosus Schlegel, 1871   -  Numfor, Biak and Traitor's I in Geelvink Bay (north-western New Guinea). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Geelvink Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus speciosus).
  • johannis Sclater, PL, 1877   -  Admiralty Is, St Matthias Group and New Hanover (Bismarck Archipelago).
  • meyeri Hartert, 1926   -  New Britain and satellite islands (Crown, Long, Tolokiwa, Umboi, Malai, Sakar, Witu, Umboi, Watom).
  • neumanni Hartert, 1926   -  Nissan I in Green Is (western Solomons).
  • bistictus Mayr, 1931   -  Bougainville and Buka (western Solomons).
  • vulcanorum Mayr, 1931   -  Vella Lavella, Gatukai, Ranongga, Kolombangara, Rendova and Vangunu, in New Georgia Group (south-western Solomons).
  • ocularis Mayr, 1931   -  Guadalcanal (south-eastern Solomons).
  • ambiguus Mayr, 1931   -  Malaita (eastern Solomons).
  • solomonensis Gray, 1870   -  San Cristobal and Uki (south-eastern Solomons).
