Nest
A loose, flimsy platform composed of sticks, in a small tree a few meters above the ground.
Eggs (Guide)
1; matt, white; ellipsoidal; about 37 x 26 mm.
Subspecies
Black-backed Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus cinctus) and Banded Fruit-Dove (Ptilinopus alligator) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped into Ptilinopus cinctus following Christidis and Boles (1994).
The following 7 subspecies are recognised:
cinctus (Temminck, 1809) - Timor, Wetar and Romang.
alligator (Collett, 1898) - North-central Australia (western escarpment of Arnhem Land). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Banded Fruit-Dove (Ptilinopus alligator).
ottonis Hartert, 1904 - Damar, Nila and Babar.
everetti Rothschild, 1898 - Pantar and Alor.
albocinctus Wallace, 1864 - Lombok, Sumbawa and Flores.
