Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland and montane moist forest. Rugged sandstone escarpments among gorges and cliffs and rainforests. From sea-level - 1,500 m.
Western escarpment of Arnhem Land from headwaters of South Alligator R, then southern and western from El Sherana north to Oenpelli. Distribution in virtually inaccessible central and eastern areas of the escarpment is unknown.

Nest
A loose, flimsy platform composed of sticks, in a small tree a few meters above the ground.
Eggs (Guide)
1; matt, white; ellipsoidal; about 37 x 26 mm.
Subspecies
Not recognized as a species by BirdLife International. Black-backed Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus cinctus) and Banded Fruit-Dove (Ptilinopus alligator) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped into Ptilinopus cinctus following Christidis and Boles (1994).
Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Black-backed Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus cinctus).
No subspecies.
Similar Species
In poor viewing conditions and at rest with Pied Imperial-Pigeon (Ducula bicolor) which is much larger, wholly white below and has white wings.
