Subspecies
Geotrygon lawrencii (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Purplish-backed Quail-Dove (Zentrygon lawrencii) and Tuxtla Quail-Dove (Zentrygon carrikeri) following AOU (1998).
Like most of congeners, formerly placed in genus Oreopeleia. Forms superspecies with Purplish-backed Quail-Dove (Zentrygon lawrencii), with which usually considered conspecific. There are some similarity in vocalizations reported. However, the closest populations of the two are 1,500 km apart.
No subspecies.
Similar Species
Ruddy Quail-Dove (Geotrygon montana) which is smaller, browner and lacks white face.
