Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland and montane moist forest. From sea-level - 2,600 m.

Subspecies
Like most of congeners, formerly placed in genus Oreopeleia. A very distinctly marked member of the genus. Perhaps closely related to Key West Quail-Dove (Geotrygon chrysia), Bridled Quail-Dove (Geotrygon mystacea) and Violaceous Quail-Dove (Geotrygon violacea). Subspecies martinica has been considered a separate species.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • montana (Linnaeus, 1758)   -  Mexico (from southern Sinaloa and Veracruz) south through Central America and Greater Antilles (Cuba and I of Pines, Jamaica, Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, perhaps St Tomas) to Colombia, Venezuela and the Guianas, and south to Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, central and southern Brazil (western Mato Grosso, Rio Grande do Sul) and extreme north-eastern Argentina (Misiones).
  • martinica (Linnaeus, 1766)   -  Lesser Antilles (Guadeloupe, Dominica, Martinique, St Lucia).
