Subspecies
Like most of congeners, formerly placed in genus Oreopeleia. Possibly related to Key West Quail-Dove (Geotrygon chrysia) and Bridled Quail-Dove (Geotrygon mystacea), both of which it resembles in coloration.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

albiventer Lawrence, 1865 - Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama through north-eastern Colombia (Santa Marta region) to west, northern and south-central Venezuela.
violacea (Temminck, 1809) - Surinam, through eastern Brazil south of Amazon (eastern Pará, Alagoas and Bahia through Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais to S�o Paulo and Paraná) to northern and eastern Bolivia (Pando, La Paz, Beni, Santa Cruz), Paraguay and extreme north-eastern Argentina (Misiones).
